Simply the oldest sports facility in Italy! The civic arena of Milan was built by Napoleon Bonaparte! The legendary Ambrosiana Inter played there often and Milan also played a few matches! It is located inside the "Sempione" public park in Milan!
The amphitheater was inaugurated on 17 December 1807 with a great naumachia, in the presence of Napoleon.
During the Cisalpine Republic and the Kingdom of Italy, the Arena mainly hosted naumachie (flooding it with water from an adjacent canal), horse races and fireworks. In the 19th century it was used for parties, circus shows (such as the famous circus of Buffalo Bill), balloon ascents and winter skating. In 1895 the Arena opened up to modern sports with the holding of the Italian cycling championships.
I ran there 35 years ago. I came across it again by pure chance the other day. I kindly asked the person who was regulating the entrance (waiting for a women's football match which had not yet started) to be allowed to enter for a second (even leaving a document) to take a photo in memory of times gone by: permission was denied. Sadness and disappointment
